Habitat
Straits, tidal passes and open coastal water; follows migration routes.
Behaviour
Hunts in aggressive schools, driving bait to the surface at dawn and dusk.
Feeding
Anchovy, sardine, horse mackerel.
Recommended baits
Fresh anchovy and sardine; spoons, minnows and jigs.
Recommended methods
Jigging in current, trolling, shore spinning.
Safe handling and release
Teeth are extremely sharp — use a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader; never put fingers in the mouth.
Confusable with
Small specimens can be mistaken for horse mackerel; bluefish has a protruding, toothed lower jaw.
