The most sought-after inshore predator; favours current and broken water.
Habitat
Rocky shores, breakwaters, harbour mouths and brackish estuaries.
Behaviour
Moves close to shore at dawn, dusk and in rough weather. Wary in calm, clear water.
Feeding
Small fish, shrimp, ragworm and crab.
Recommended baits
Live shrimp, ragworm, sardine strip; minnows and slim jigs on lures.
Recommended methods
Shore spinning, surf casting, drifting with the current.
Safe handling and release
Gill covers and dorsal spines are sharp; hold with wet hands. Unhook in the water if releasing.
Confusable with
Spotted seabass (Dicentrarchus punctatus), which has dark spots along the back.
