Surface-oriented fish tolerant of brackish, fresh and polluted water.

Habitat

Harbours, estuaries, lagoons and stream mouths; enters fresh water.

Behaviour

Schools near the surface and is extremely wary; gathers around bread and organic matter.

Feeding

Algae, detritus, small invertebrates.

Recommended baits

Bread flake, paste, ragworm.

Recommended methods

Fine float tackle, surface groundbaiting.

Safe handling and release

Scales shed easily; handle with wet hands. Fish from polluted water may not be suitable to eat.

Other mullet species; separated by the adipose eyelid and lip structure.
