Conservation first: the undulate ray is Endangered on the IUCN list and on the Irish Red List, and in several countries it is protected or its landing is restricted. Check your local rules and in every case return the fish alive with as little time out of the water as possible. Unlike starry and spotted rays it comes into fairly shallow water, but it often feeds at range, so casts of over 100 yards may be needed; use a single-hook clipped-down rig and 1/0–3/0 hooks. Peeler crab is regarded as the best bait, with mackerel, herring and squid also good choices.
