Dogfish need no complicated gear: a one- or two-hook flapping rig on the seabed with 1/0–2/0 hooks is enough. They take almost any bait — mackerel strip, squid and sandeel are the usual choices — but keep baits modest, as the mouth is small and set underneath the head. They live on sandy to mixed ground, usually shallower than 50 metres, and feed by day as well as at night. The skin is like sandpaper and the fish will wrap itself around your arm: hold the tail firmly alongside the head to unhook it, and return it to the water gently.
