Sand steenbras are surf-beach fish: they feed in the gully just behind the breaking waves, so a 25–30 m cast is enough on most nights — accuracy matters more than distance. Lugworm is the number-one bait, followed by ragworm, mud shrimp and shrimp; if you only take one bait, take lugworm. Surf rigs typically use 0.20–0.25 mm fluorocarbon snoods of 40–60 cm with long-shank size 4–6 hooks; use the lightest lead that holds the bait on the sand. One guide finds new-moon nights more reliable than full moon, when the fish can be reluctant to come shallow, although forum anglers also report good nights under a cloud-broken moon.
