BEST TIMES
Morning Afternoon
Adult salema are almost entirely herbivorous and roam weedy rocks and sand patches in shoals, so the best baits are a dough ball of bread crumb or bread crust, and seaweed is worth a try. Light tackle is enough: 0.25–0.30 mm line, a sliding lead of about 10 g, and fine size 7–8 hooks tied straight onto the trace without snoods to reduce snagging. To check whether they are present, throw a few pieces of bread in; where salema are around they usually show within a minute or two. The flesh softens quickly, so clean the fish straight away and eat it the same day.
