BEST TIMES

Saddled bream move in shoals and are very shy and sharp-eyed, so fine line is the golden rule: use a 0.12–0.16 mm fluorocarbon hooklength and little or no lead. First throw bread within hand-throwing range (stale bread mashed in seawater, perhaps with some crushed sardine); after about 15 minutes, once the shoal has gathered, fish bread flake or crust, peeled shrimp or salted, firmed-up chicken breast under a float. Just before dawn and the first hours after sunset are the most productive times; breakwaters, harbour mouths and rocky points are classic marks. From a boat, small bright 3–5 cm minnows or white-and-red feathers can be trolled slowly at about 1.5–2 knots.
