Round sardinella
Sardinella aurita
How to catch it
METHODS
Sabiki / feather rig
LURES
Sabiki feathers
BEST TIMES
Night
It feeds on plankton (mostly small crustaceans), so it shows little interest in baited hooks; a fine, small-hooked sardine sabiki is the sensible approach. It prefers clear, salty coastal water and rises to the surface at night: work the rig gently under a light. Like sardine its mouth is soft; once fish are on, stop jigging and lift slowly. It is rarely a target in itself and mostly turns up mixed in with sardines.
