Shad move in large schools in mid-water, and feathered sabiki rigs are the most used method. In anglers' experience thin white feathers don't always work; dark green glittery or glow feathers with small black hooks can do better. Casting a small metal spoon long and retrieving fast also works on migrating schools. At sea it eats small crustaceans as well as small fish such as anchovy and sprat, so anchovy fillet or shrimp baits are worth a try.
