METHODS

NATURAL BAITS

LURES

BEST TIMES

Dawn Dusk

Pompano travel in schools and strike suddenly; noisy poppers and walk-the-dog surface lures are effective, retrieved a little faster than usual. For small fish use LRF gear with 5–10 g micro jigs and small scented soft plastics; for bigger fish a live sand smelt or mullet fry 1–2 m under a float works well. Fish sandy shallows, the break line of the surf, breakwater tips and river mouths. Release fish under 20–25 cm and go easy during the May–June spawning period.
