BEST TIMES
Morning Afternoon
Picarel move in shoals over seagrass and muddy bottoms and usually sit deeper than blotched picarel (mostly below 15 m), so bottom fishing from a boat is the most practical method. Tie small size 9–14 hooks to short (10–12 cm) 0.16–0.20 mm snoods and bait with salted mussel, a piece of shrimp or skinned fish strip. Once you find a shoal, mark it and return to it; a baited 15–25 hook 'picarel string' is also used, though it is fiddly to rig and fish. Mind the sharp dorsal spines — stroke them flat from the nape when handling.
