Parrotfish live on shallow rocky shores, weedy rock platforms and rock–sand transitions; they are herbivores that also eat small invertebrates, and feed in daylight. On Turkish coasts they are reported taken from the shore, often alongside rabbitfish, on a float rig baited with bread crumb. In the Canary Islands a small crab is considered almost the only bait, fished on heavy 0.45–0.60 mm line with a single large 2/0–3/0 hook. Parrotfish bite at the hook point rather than swallowing and dive straight for the rocks, so strike firmly at the first proper take and keep the fish away from the rock.
