WARNING: the spines in the dorsal, pelvic and anal fins of rabbitfish are venomous and cause severe pain and swelling even when the fish is dead. Unhook with gloves and pliers, hold the fish firmly by the gill covers and snip the spines off with scissors before cleaning; seek medical help if the pain does not ease, if you have allergies or if swelling spreads. Rabbitfish are herbivores moving in shoals of 50 to several hundred: groundbait the swim with soaked bread, then fish a light float rig with 2–3 short (15 cm) snoods, or an unweighted Cyprus wrap rig, baited with bread paste, chicken breast or a small piece of seaweed. The bite is gentle, but once hooked they dive for the bottom or behind rocks, so wind in as soon as the float goes under.
