Lionfish are an invasive species that arrived through the Suez Canal; they are spreading in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean and put pressure on native species. The fin spines are highly venomous and can cause serious poisoning: never handle the fish bare-handed, unhook it with pliers, or cut the line at the hook if in doubt. If stung, soak the area in water as hot as can be tolerated without scalding for 60–90 minutes, and get medical care if spine fragments remain or pain and swelling worsen. Don't return a caught lionfish to the sea; once the spines are carefully cut away and it is cleaned, the flesh is good to eat.
