This large goby (knout goby) feeds mainly on fish, so anchovy or horse mackerel strips can outfish mussel. In spring it moves inshore over sand, shell and rock to spawn; in summer it drops back to 20–60 m and is found from a boat with a bottom rig. A one- or two-hook rig with short snoods and a small lead keeps snags down; small soft plastics along rocky edges are worth a try too.
