BEST TIMES

Garfish cruise just under the surface: use a small float, light line and a small fine-wire hook, with the bait a few tens of centimetres down. The commonest mistake is striking too early; they grab the bait with the beak first, so wait a second or two after the float goes under, then strike firmly. Keep baits thin — a sliver of fish is enough — and check the point often, as the bony beak blunts it. On lures, small slow-sinking metals work well, and an oily slick of fish oil or chopped fish draws the shoal in.
