BEST TIMES

Dusk Night Dawn

Squid are mainly fished after sunset and through the night where pier and harbour lights gather baitfish; on Turkish coasts autumn and spring are the most productive seasons. Eging set-up: a 2.1–2.7 m egi rod, PE 0.6–0.8 braid and about a rod-length of fluorocarbon leader. Egi choice: 2.5 for shallow, calm water, 3.0 for most conditions and 3.5 for deep water or strong current; natural colours in clear water, bright or glow colours in coloured water and at night. Let the jig sink to the bottom or chosen depth, snap it up with short sharp rod lifts, then let it glide down on a tight line: squid mostly grab it on the drop. Using lights to attract fish or squid is prohibited for recreational anglers in Turkey.
