BEST TIMES

Plaice are mostly caught from March to September on open surf beaches and sandy patches next to rock, especially near mussel beds; they avoid very shallow water, so baits need at least a few metres of depth. Ragworm and lugworm take most fish; tipping with crab or mussel helps, but keep baits small for the small mouth. Plain rolling leads to find gullies, long-shank Aberdeen hooks and beads or sequins on the snoods are worth trying. In daylight a long squid strip or shiny mackerel belly adds visual pull.
