BEST TIMES
Night Dusk
Conger feed mainly at night over heavy rock and very rough ground inshore, though in deep water they feed at any time. Their teeth cut ordinary line: use a wire trace or very heavy (150 lb+) mono, strong 6/0–10/0 hooks and a weak-link or rotten-bottom lead to limit tackle losses. Mackerel (whole, head or fillet) is the standard bait, with big squid and cuttlefish as alternatives. Give a taking fish a little time, but not too long or it will back into a hole; leaving the reel on the ratchet warns you of a take and stops the rod being dragged in.
