WARNING: the fin spines of the dusky spinefoot, including the one on the nape, are venomous, and when threatened it suddenly erects its dorsal, pelvic and anal fins together. Even a dead fish causes severe pain and swelling if a spine goes in: use gloves and pliers, hold it by the gill covers, snip the spines off before cleaning, and seek medical help if the pain persists or you show signs of allergy. Compared with the marbled spinefoot it moves in smaller groups, very shallow and close to the bottom, grazing algae on hard mixed sand-and-rock ground. Groundbait with soaked bread and present bread paste, chicken breast or a bit of seaweed on a light, fine-line float rig; after the bite, wind in quickly before the fish reaches the rocks.
