Cuckoo wrasse prefer rocky ground a little deeper than ballan and avoid very shallow water, though shore anglers still catch them. Ragworm outfishes lugworm, and peeler crab is especially good for this species. Over rock use a one- or two-hook flapper with a weak-link lead; around 1/0 is a good hook size, as small hooks get swallowed deep. Wrasse brought up from depth are sensitive to pressure change, so handle them carefully, mind the dorsal spines and return them quickly.
