Whitefish have a small mouth that makes them hard to hook, so they call for small hooks, fine hooklengths and patience. On Finnish shores in spring they are fished with worms from rocky shores with sand in front, where they feed 20–30 metres out on small worms rising from the mud; they take the bait on the move, so lift quickly when you feel a bite. They are also caught through the ice in winter, where a light mormyshka (small weighted hook) baited with a fly larva on fine line is worth trying.
