Dab are small flatfish best found on sandy surf beaches and sandy patches among rock; they avoid the low-salinity upper reaches of estuaries. Use size 2–6 hooks and small baits: lugworm (especially black lug), ragworm, mussel and squid strip all work, and slightly stale bait often does better. After dark they move into very shallow water, so short casts are enough; cast further as the tide ebbs. Gullies and dips that collect food are the places to fish.
