BEST TIMES

Dawn Morning Dusk

Cuttlefish live on the bottom; in spring they move onto weedy shallows to breed, and in winter they retreat to deeper water. They are caught on squid jigs (egi), but worked slower and closer to the bottom than for squid: keep the lifts short, lengthen the pauses and keep the jig just above the bottom without dragging it through weed and rock. A jig let down near the bottom while drifting with the current from a boat also works. The take usually feels like added weight; don't strike hard, wait a few seconds, wind slowly, net it and hold it in the water for a moment to let it empty its ink.
