Burbot are bottom fish of cold, well-oxygenated, deep water and feed mainly at night. In midwinter (usually January–February) they move from deep water into the shallows to spawn, and that is the main season. Through the ice, drop a burbot jig to the bottom, jig sharply so it rattles and stirs the mud, then hold it still for about five seconds; tip it with a piece of Baltic herring, smelt or vendace, and move to a new hole if nothing happens within a few minutes. Burbot have been listed as Near Threatened in Finland since 2019, so think about how many you keep.
