BEST TIMES

Night Dusk

Bogue stay offshore and deep by day and move inshore and up to the surface after dark, so the main fishing is at night from piers, on the shoal gathering at the edge of the lights. A fine sabiki (size 8–12) or micro sabiki is the most practical rig; if the fish are reluctant, tipping the hooks with a tiny piece of shrimp or fish can help. On a float rig use fine-wire size 8–12 hooks and small baits — the mouth is small, so don't let the bait overhang the hook. Calm, lightly breezy, moonless nights are usually best, and little-and-often groundbait keeps the shoal close.
