BEST TIMES

Morning Afternoon Dawn

Blotched picarel love mussel; salting the mussel and letting it stand makes it sticky so it stays on the hook, and pieces of shrimp or a strip cut from a fish's back also work. The most common rig is a three-hook paternoster with short 10–12 cm snoods of 0.20 mm; the smaller the hooks (size 9–14), the better it fishes. Lower to the bottom, keep the line just taut and wait for the bite without moving the rig. Picarel feed by day and the bite usually stops after sunset; the dorsal fin has sharp spines, so stroke it closed from the nape when handling the fish.
