BEST TIMES

Dusk Night Morning

Black bream have small mouths and move in shoals: keep baits small and just fill the hook — size 4–6 is usually enough, dropping a size for spooky fish. Squid strip, ragworm tipped with a sliver of squid, a cube of fresh mackerel, shrimp and sardine pieces are classic baits; hook strips at one end so they flutter in the tide. After dark shoals come inshore and feed harder; in Turkey they are often taken at night on light, unleaded tackle. Fluorocarbon hooklengths are recommended; don't pump the fish — wind slowly and steadily, as they shed hooks easily.
