BEST TIMES

The dorsal, pelvic and anal fin spines are venomous and very painful if they go in; hold the fish with your thumb in its mouth and finger under the lower jaw, or unhook it with pliers, and seek medical help if the pain persists. It is a sedentary ambush predator of rocky, weedy bottoms that moves up to shorelines and harbour walls after dark. Keep the sinker off the bottom and work the bait slowly a hand or two above the rocks: the movement draws attention and cuts down snags. Horse mackerel or bogue strips, shrimp and, for LRF, small soft plastics are worth trying; releasing the small ones is a good habit.
