Wolffish live over broken rocky ground with crevices, at 30 m or deeper, and feed on sea urchins, mussels and crabs. Most are caught on big fish or squid baits meant for cod or conger; in deep Scandinavian waters heavy pirks also work. They have strong fangs and will snap when lifted out of the water, so unhook with long pliers. They mature late and recover slowly, so do not overharvest.
