How to catch it

METHODS

Sabiki / feather rig

LURES

Sabiki feathers

BEST TIMES

Dusk Dawn Night Morning

Herring are pelagic: deep by day, rising as light fades, so dusk, dawn and overcast days are more productive. Use a fine sabiki or small feather rig with size 4–6 hooks; moving the rod tip sideways as for mackerel imitates a shoal better. Herring have soft mouths and wriggle hard on the way up, so avoid heavy strikes and lift steadily. Fresh herring is excellent bait for conger, cod and bottom species.
