From the shore use strong 3/0–6/0 hooks and big baits; the large hook also screens out bait-robbing whiting. A clipped-down pennell rig suits clean sand, a pennell pulley rig suits mixed and rough ground; peeler crab, lugworm and squid cocktails are the classic baits. From a boat, work a pirk or a big soft plastic slowly near the bottom with pauses; cod often take on the drop and lift the line slack. Cod stocks are weak in several areas, so check size and bag rules.
