Annular bream have small mouths but hard jaws and are notorious bait thieves: use fine, short-shank size 8–12 hooks — gilthead or sand steenbras hooks are too big. Thread the bait (ragworm, a piece of shrimp, mussel) on tightly so it covers the shank with the point just showing; elastic bait thread helps keep it on. Rather than a hard strike, lift the rod to take up slack. Harbours, pier legs, stony ground and seagrass edges are typical spots; the best months are May to November, and small soft plastics on LRF tackle are also worth trying.
