Monkfish are ambush predators that lie buried and lure prey with the rod on their head, so keep the bait hard on the bottom and the drift slow. Use big baits such as small fish, mackerel fillet or squid and a large hook to match the wide mouth. On rod and line most are incidental catches on rigs meant for cod, conger or rays; targeting them takes sand or mud bottoms and patience. Tackle figures are conservative typical ranges.
